Coral Reef Montessori Academy Charter

The Hand that Nurtures Loves the World

Dr. King and Dr. Canzoneri-Golden are trailblazers in teacher-led educational reform, offering an alternative to the top-down initiatives common in urban education. As the first teachers in Florida to found a charter school, they embody the original spirit of the movement, bringing over 80 years of combined experience—50 years from Dr. King and 35 years from Dr. Golden.

Their leadership has driven Coral Reef Montessori Academy's success, reflected in its growth and the strong commitment of families who often send multiple children to the school. Despite CRMA's evolution, they remain dedicated to protecting each child's individuality and fostering an optimal learning environment where all students thrive.

When CRMA opened in 1998, only seven charter schools existed in Miami-Dade County; today, CRMA remains one of the four still operating, thanks to their perseverance. The school offers a sustainable learning culture that values curiosity, compassion, and individuality. Both founders actively supported the early charter school movement, providing valuable guidance to over 100 schools that followed.

Their journey began at Pine Villa Elementary, where the challenges of balancing three different programs under one roof inspired them to create a school where all students could benefit from the Montessori approach. Driven by their passion for Montessori education, they pursued advanced training at Barry University and later responded to a statewide call for teachers to start charter schools. Their shared belief in every child's potential became the foundation for Coral Reef Montessori Academy.

One of their biggest challenges was finding a location for the school. With the help of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church and Reverend Rufus Troop, they secured a space and worked tirelessly to open the school’s doors. The founding Board of Directors shared their dedication and played a crucial role in getting CRMA off the ground.

Today, CRMA continues to grow, with all students benefiting from the Montessori approach, regardless of their background. The school recently earned AMS and COGNIA dual accreditation, one of only 19 public schools in the nation with this distinction. Dr. King and Dr. Canzoneri-Golden remain committed to creating a responsive, student-centered learning environment. Their determination is encapsulated in the belief that when a purpose is just, no obstacle can stand in the way.

At the heart of the charter movement is the belief in a student-centered, teacher-supportive model, recognizing teachers as co-creators of learning communities. By empowering teachers, they are better equipped to inspire and challenge students, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic learning experience.
